About Publicolor Inc
On The Surface, Publicolor Is An After-School Art/Design Vocational Training And Apprenticeship Program. Working In Low-Income Neighborhoods Throughout New York City, We Partner With Dynamic, Innovative Public School Principals Who Understand The Negative Impact That Run-Down, Depressing Environments Have On Their Ability To Create A Positive, Achievement-Oriented School Culture. Together We Target Their Most At-Risk (And Often Most Disruptive) Students, But We Invite All Students To Design, Plan, And Implement The Physical Transformation Of The Public Spaces In Their Schools. Over 90% Of Participants In All Publicolor Programs Come From Families Receiving Public Assistance, And Many Are First-Generation Americans. We Find That When The Young People With Whom We Work Join Our Programs, They Are Largely Unaware Of The Value Of Education And Work. They Have Little Knowledge About Post-Secondary Opportunities And Few, If Any, Connections To Successful Professionals To Serve As Role Models. They Are Unprepared To Enter The Workforce Due To A Lack Of Marketable Skills And The Social Skills Needed To Succeed In An Increasingly Competitive Workplace. Our Students Are 11-20 Years Old; Nearly Evenly Split Male/Female; More Than 94% Are African-American Or 47% Latino. Our Programs Specifically Aim At Engaging Students Who Are The Most At-Risk Of Dropping Out, And We Work With School Leadership To Identify These Students.
